we were going to go camping

We had plans to camp this labor day weekend but we are surrounded by forest fired and air quality is horrible. Not to mention, fires are banned. What fun is camping without a fire? So instead, we hopped a plane to Korea! It was very last minute so Isaac had to stay home to work. I felt horrible leaving him but the other 3 didn't think that should justify us staying home, considering all of his travels. He was very supportive of us going and did a good job holding down the fort.
Business class isn't a bad way to travel.

We arrived around 3pm, took a train to downtown Seoul, found our hostel to leave our bags and had fun exploring the big city. Seoul is a fun, beautiful city! The people seemed very laid back and happy. It felt very safe for such a large city and a little surreal considering N Korea is looming just 40 miles north of here.
Lots of couples were dressed up in traditional garb to go to the palace. I guess they rent the dresses and suits from nearby shops.
Coolest cotter candy ever! There was a big street market with lots of vendors along a beautiful river area in downtown. The river had been covered for years under concrete and they've recently exposed it and made a walking path along both sides. Lots of couples and families sitting a long the banks of the river.
We got back to our hostel around 10pm and we're exhausted! We had been up for hours!
Headed out early the next morning on a tour to see the DMZ (demiliterization Zone) this is where N Korea and S Korea meet. It was good to learn some history and get the perpective of our guide. S. Korea is anxious for "reunification" with N. Korea but of course on their terms, as I'm sure N Korea is anxious for reunification but on their terms. Apparently a large nuke was set off in N Korea testing grounds while we were there which caused an earthquake. Thankfully we felt very safe while we were there and it was well worth the trip.

Looking at N korea. They have a city just past the trees.

Getting home wasn't quite as easy or as comfortable as our travels there. We had to get creative to get home. Flew on Korean Air to LAX, then to Boise and rented a car home. Arrived at 3am...wasn't even a full 3 days from when we left. The joys of standby. It was well worth the experience though and I think all of us would jump at the chance to do it again!

So happy to have seats!
