West Point & NYC w/Dawson

Dawson worked really hard all spring to prepare an application to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He first had to apply for a congressional nomination which was an involved process of obtaining letters of recommendations, a resume, transcripts, test scores, and a zoom (thanks to Covid)  interview with their selection committee. He also was busy prepping for the fitness test. Matt hung a pull-up bar in the garage and Daws got to work with running, sit-ups, pull ups, and the one arm throw -can't remember what it was called and I’m sure I forgot another events.  His high school PE teacher administered the test and it was a proud mom moment witnessing him push his body to the limit, he crushed it.

Matt and Dawson and I took a trip during spring break to visit West Point, he got word shortly before we left that he was being considered for the West Point Prep Academy which is a 1 year, on campus, prep program. We knew it would be a huge decision for Dawson and that he definitely needed to have spent some time there in order to make that decision. It was a special trip in a special place, there is SO MUCH HISTORY and it was so great to get that time with Dawson.

We also popped down to Philadelphia for a day and a couple days in NYC.

Shortly after we got home he received word that he had received an appointment to the prep academy and had 30 days to make the decision!!  I know it was a tough decision for Daws. His dream has been to fly and there was no guarantee he’d get to fly at West Point. That, factored in with a lot of other things led him to ultimately decided on the helicopter program at Utah State where he and Adam have been roommates; it has been amazing for the two of them, they’ve had so much fun together! We’ve loved having him closer than NY and the helicopter program at Utah State has been great for him. It has also allowed him to live closer to Sydney and the 2 of them will be married this fall!

Pretty awesome that Dawson pursued West Point. I’m so proud of him for seeking the challenge and then also proud of him for recognizing that maybe it wasn’t the right opportunity for him.  I have no doubt that he will be successful at anything does and I know he's stronger for the challenge of this experience.
