Black Sand Beach Hike

Today we took a drive to Hawi (Havee) it's about 25 miles from us and is at the north shore of this island. I've heard that Oprah has a ranch near there...maybe she wants us to house sit for her? Anyway, we stopped at the King Kamehameha park & statue. He is the king that unified all of the islands years ago and he was from Hawi. It is small town Hawaii and hasn't changed much in the past 50 years. It doesn't have any of the huge resorts you find along the Kohala coast but it sure has some amazing views. We drove to the end of Hwy 270 which abruptly ends at this overlook.
Can you say WOW?? We decided to try the 20 minute hike down to the black sand beach below. So here are the kids before we started.

Once we got started we thought we might be getting into more than we bargained for. We passed many people totally out of breath on their way back up. It's a pretty steep hike down (which means it's steep coming back up) and the kids were in sandals. Here's a shot of Isaac and Adam half way down. Amazing views!

We made it to the bottom. Here's Olivia and Dawson.
Look what we got to enjoy for the afternoon!

Isaac did lots of body surfing. He stayed in the water the entire time. The waves were pretty big...bigger than we had been in before. Adam, Livy and Dawson spent a lot of time playing in the black sand. It was such fine, soft sand...and very very black! They all had a great time running from the waves too. It was totally worth the walk down but I was dreading the hike back up.

These kids were AMAZING though. We made it up in record time...less than 20 minutes. We were faster going up than going down. People passing by on their way down were amazed with the kids. The kept up a fast pace and we only stopped a couple times to enjoy the view.So now the question is...when are you coming to visit?

That is so BEAUTIFUL! I'm seriously tempted to come and visit. Do you think you'll still be there in 10 years? :) That's when we are really planning our Hawaii trip.

I had to laugh at the last sentence...when are we coming to visit? LOL Hummm...you were only in Logan for a year...and I only saw you once in that time. ;-) By the time we save enough, are you still going to be there.

You have got to STOP posting all these amazing pictures and adventures. It is driving me crazy! If only we were rich and could visit! You are so lucky to have this adventurous life with your kids.

I'll be there tomorrow! We looked all over for some Black sand beaches on the other islands, should have known they would be on the big island! That's a for sure place to take us to when we come!
