Last week Hawaii celebrated King Kamehameha Day. He was the king that unified all of the Hawaiian islands long ago. It is a state holiday but Matt had to work so the kids and I headed north to Hawi for the parade and celebrations (his home town). It's such a beautiful part of the island but there isn't much there. We enjoyed the parade and decided to walk to the park where the parade was ending with lots of festivities. We ran into Dawson's friend Kai from school and his mom Susan and they decided to walk with us to the park...WELL..we WAlked and we WalKed and we WALKED all of us in slippers (flip flops) and finally after what felt like forever with no sign of the park in site we asked some parade watchers how far the park was. They responded with "about 2 miles" We had already walked 1.5 miles (I measured it after we got the car). So rather than continueing 2 more miles just to have to walk back 3.5 miles. I went into a store on the side of the highway, bought the kids some gaterade and water and left them on the side of the highway while I quickly walked/ran back to the car with Susan and Kai. It was an adventure for sure!! we thought we'd drive to the park instead but once we got the car the traffic was still backed up almost the entire 2 more miles and everyone was heading to the same place! we decided to forgo the festivities and just go home to the swimming pool! at least the parade had candy so the kids were happy. We made a pit stop at a little ocean side park on the way home. The kids enjoyed climbing on the rocks and it looked like an incredible snorkling spot we'll have to check out. if you look close you can see the kids on the rocks
